I wonder what the best places to be a bang-average person have been at each point in human history. Like, in 5000 BCE or 300 CE or 1450 or 1850 or whenever, if you were gonna be the median human being in your country or community, what would be the best country or community to be the most mediocre person?

    version 1: the letter

"If we happen, under certain circumstances, to have written and sealed and despatched a letter to a friend, which, however, does not find him, but is brought back to us, and we open it at the distance of some considerable time, a singular emotion is produced in us, on breaking up our own seal, and conversing with our altered self as with a third person."

    version 2: the toot

"If we happen, under certain circumstances, to have written and sealed and despatched a [toot] to [the Fediverse], and at the distance of some considerable time it is brought back to us [by a belated boost], and we open it, a singular emotion is produced in us, on breaking up our own seal, and conversing with our altered self as with a third person."

OggVorbis code is fugly. Function consuming >32KB stack space (everyone has large stacks right?), using alloca() to dynamically allocate stack space all over, no checking for memory allocation failures from malloc(), realloc() etc. 😐

I don't always know if I should post my poetry attempts. I don't think of myself as "poetic" at all and kinda feel like my little stabs at it are maybe kinda insulting to actual poets, lol (this can't be true).

BUT! I have a conviction that art isn't only for those good at it, and that writing bad poetry is better than not even trying to write poetry at all, and maybe if I share a bad poem someone with more talent but less confidence than I have might see it and think "hey, maybe I can write a poem if this guy thinks he can" and then they'll write a better poem than I could ever write and the world will be a better place.

So, if you see me posting my bad poetry, know that I'm doing it in the hopes it could lead to better poetry.

This is probably the worst reaction you might get, but who really cares? It's not saying anything about your poem, no meaningful critique, no thought.
But many people still enjoy having poems in their timeline, me included :)

I don't remember the author, but the story is that a man was driving his sone home and the boy asked, "What did you do today, Dad?" "Oh, as usual I spent the day teaching people how to draw."

His son looked him in horror and asked, "YOU MEAN THEY FORGET?"

my advice, never read the source code of open source project you use!
there's a high chance they're written as poorly as a super-hero movie on budget, and you'd never be able to use them confidently ever again.

Edit: not that proprietary software is any better, but being able to do something (studying the code) doesn't mean you should do it 😅
