                        It seems Japan is facing its own Mr. Magoo moment. The Autism Society of Japan (ASJ) has [issued a statement](animenewsnetwork.com/interest/ about the planned anime adaption of Mii-chan and Miss Yamada.

                        While Mii-chan is not explicitly mentioned to be disabled, her name is being used by children as a disparaging nickname children, particularly girls, with disabilities. The ASJ has suggested the adaptation not go forward.

                        The parallels to Disney's disastrous live-action adaptation of Mr. Magoo in the 90s' are impossible to ignore. The National Federation of the Blind called for the movie to not be made. People wrote about how they were called Magoo, disparagingly as children, and how it hurt them.

                        Disney ignored these please, deciding a little disclaimer at the end of the film claiming the movie "is not intended as an accurate portrayal of blindness or poor eyesight" was enough. The movie was a critical and commercial failure in an extreme capacity.

                        Perhaps Flag Pictures should learn from this lesson and save themselves some money while protecting the dignity of disabled children in Japan. Perhaps we can write to Cruchyroll and other anime streamers, informing them subscriptions will be cancelled if they license this show in solidarity.

                                                                  Ist äußerst selten passiert, dass sich bekannte Filmkritiker wie Roger Ebert und Zeitungen wie die FAZ im letzten Jahrhundert mit einem Anime beschäftigt und ihn als "wertvoll" rezensiert haben.

                                                                  Der Anime-Film heißt "Die letzten Glühwürmchen" (1988) und handelt vom Überleben von Kindern ohne ihre Eltern in Japan 1945.

                                                                  Er basiert auf der teilweise autobiografischen Kurzgeschichte „Das Grab der Leuchtkäfer“ (1967) von Akiyuki Nosaka, dessen Schwester im Zweiten Weltkrieg verhungerte.

                                                                  Vor dem Hintergrund wirkt die Einstufung der FSK wieder mal nach:

                                                                  "Zeichentrickfilm? Ach, für Kinder => FSK: 6"

                                                                  In den Rezensionen von Online-Händlern wird oft darauf hingewiesen, dass der Film nicht für Kinder geeignet sei.
