For years I’ve been dreaming of a #browser for #iOS with a nice UI (like Arc Search or the same Safari), with the possibility to customise it, a piece of software that respects my privacy (even #Firefox in iOS collects a lot of data), that has a translator that works in many languages and does it locally, that has the possibility to run small LLMs locally…

I was tired of not having what I wanted, so I decided to build my own, and now I want to introduce you to #TheBrowser.

It is a very light browser that has all of those functionalities that I wanted without sacrificing my #privacy.

it doesn't happen on #Firefox, but i don't want to use #mozilla products. isn't that the very point of your existence⁉️

A few days ago, I enabled tagged PDF generation in #Firefox Nightly! So, whenever you create a PDF from a web page using the Save to PDF option in the Firefox Print dialog, it will now be (mostly) accessible with assistive technology, assuming the original page was accessible of course. I say "mostly" accessible because this isn't perfect yet, but it's a massive step forward from producing completely inaccessible PDF documents. It also generates a document outline (table of contents) from the headings in the document.
This is very new code, so it's only enabled in Nightly for now and we'll probably let it bake in Nightly for a few weeks at least before we consider shipping it to release.

🦊⏱️ Firefox va testa un ciclu de lansare de două săptămâni începând din septembrie

Mozilla se pregătește să schimbe viteza în ceea ce privește dezvoltarea browserului său web. Începând cu luna septembrie, Firefox va experimenta un ciclu de lansare accelerat de doar două săptămâni, reducând la jumătate perioada actuală de patru săptămâni dintre versiunile majore.

Această decizie experimentală are ca scop aducerea mult mai rapidă a funcțiilor noi, a optimizărilor și a patch-urilor de securitate către utilizatori, adaptând browserul la ritmul alert al web-ului modern.

Iată detaliile cheie ale acestei inițiative anunțate de Mozilla:

🔹 De ce trece Firefox la un ritm de 2 săptămâni?
În prezent, Firefox urmează un ciclu de lansare stabil de 4 săptămâni (introdus în 2020, după ce anterior fusese de 6-8 săptămâni). Trecerea la un interval de 2 săptămâni oferă mai multe avantaje strategice:

Feedback rapid: Dezvoltatorii pot testa funcții noi pe un public larg mult mai repede și pot ajusta codul în funcție de răspunsul utilizatorilor.

Securitate sporită: Patch-urile pentru vulnerabilități și corecțiile de bug-uri nu vor mai trebui să aștepte o lună întreagă sau să fie livrate prin versiuni punctuale (ex: .0.1), ci vor fi integrate nativ în fluxul principal mult mai des.

Livrări mai mici și mai sigure: Lansările mai frecvente înseamnă că fiecare actualizare va conține mai puține schimbări masive de cod deodată, reducând riscul ca un update să „strice” funcționalități majore sau extensii.

🔹 Cum va funcționa faza de testare?
Experimentul va începe în luna septembrie și se va desfășura pe o perioadă determinată pentru a evalua impactul asupra ecosistemului:

Faza pilot va viza inițial versiunile de testare (cum ar fi Firefox Beta sau Developer Edition) și anumite grupuri de utilizatori de pe canalul stabil.

Mozilla va monitoriza îndeaproape stabilitatea browserului, feedback-ul comunității și, extrem de important, telemetria legată de performanță și consumul de resurse.

Dacă testul se va dovedi un succes și nu va suprasolicita echipele de dezvoltatori și translatorii, acest ritm accelerat ar putea deveni noul standard permanent pentru Firefox.

🔹 Provocările noului ciclu accelerat:
Deși sună excelent pentru utilizatorii dornici de noutăți, această schimbare vine și cu provocări:

Presiune pe dezvoltatorii de extensii: Creatorii de add-on-uri va trebui să își testeze și să își actualizeze extensiile mult mai des pentru a asigura compatibilitatea.

Efort dublu de QA (Quality Assurance): Echipele de testare de la Mozilla vor avea la dispoziție doar jumătate din timp pentru a identifica bug-urile înainte ca o versiune să ajungă la publicul larg.

Distribuțiile Linux: Menținătorii de pachete pentru distribuții precum Debian, Ubuntu sau Fedora vor trebui să își adapteze scripturile de compilare și testare pentru a ține pasul cu ritmul alert de lansare.

Această mișcare îndrăzneață arată că Mozilla nu vrea doar să țină pasul cu rivalii bazați pe Chromium (Chrome, Edge), ci încearcă să creeze un model de dezvoltare extrem de dinamic și adaptabil pentru singurul browser major cu motor de randare independent (Gecko).

Firefox hat ein Feature namens Adaptive History. Damit wird die URL automatisch vorausgewählt, wenn sie eindeutig ist. Das heisst, wenn man zum Beispiel früher schonmal https://gnulinux.ch aufgerufen hat, reicht dann einfach gnu zu tippen und Enter zu drücken. Aktivieren kann man das in about:config indem man browser.urlbar.autoFill.adaptiveHistory.enabled auf true setzt.

Deeply irritated this morning by #firefox on #ios. I accidentally closed a tab by swiping it very slightly. I can’t reopen the closed tab, and I can’t even see what it was. Three UX failures in one thumb twitch.

Now I have an unscratchable itch in the back of my mind that I may have deleted something important and I HATE IT.

Swipe gestures are a UX disaster. An analogue minefield of digital traps, hair thin distinctions and accessibility barriers.

Swipe gestures are deeply user hostile. Got a hand tremor? Fuck you. Over 70? Fuck you. Forgot which swipe direction is which? Fuck you. Got a rugged case that prevents you swiping up from the very edge of the screen? Haha, fuck you. #firefox #ios

A screenshot of firefox's about:config page. "termsofuse.bypassNotification" is highlighted in bold indicating it has been set to a non-default value. I set it to false. It made the nag popup go away, and the other "termsofuse" about:config vars indicate it has not been accepted.

#Firefox now has a global AI killswitch.

Settings->AI Controls->Block AI Enhancements. Turn it on and live in peace.

I'm seriously considering switching back to @firefoxwebdevs now that they support WebSerial so I can program my keyboard.

I love the way they've implemented multiple profiles, the nice little menu under the main hamburger is much cleaner, and I've never really FULLY felt at home in Vivaldi. I don't use easily 3/4ths of its functionality (I prefer reading mail with mutt and news via my self hosted RSS reader).

And yay supporting FLOSS web browsing!
