Based on the image renderer code already in CoW, I've now written an XPM3-compatible parser to support XPM images.

I was in two minds about this, but I also didn't want to depend on libxpm for this.

What I have works, and will be mostly useful for menu icons, application icons, etc. The "wm-icons" package still produces XPM files, and I'm already using some of those in cow.

What is cow? It's a window manager for Linux/*BSD written on top of the #river wayland compositor:

Now that I'm back from traveling for the time being, I decided to sit down and finish the Smithay upgrade in niri. Here's the result of 4 hours of streaming today: window moving and resizing, as well as the overview gestures, now work with a tablet, thanks to the new tablet tool grabs!

I love #gnome, its #libadwaita app ecosystem. But I also love #scrolling #tiling à la #niri. For now, #paperwm works well, but I wonder what the future of window management in GNOME will look like. 🤔

Mosaic isn't going to cut it for me. 🫣

I was wondering today if I could get Minecraft to run on native Wayland - seems like thats now a thing the game does by itself now :)

Not only should I hopefully get a nice latency reduction, but since I use fractional scaling, my game won't try and run at 2x the resolution of my 1600p HiDPi laptop, then downscale itself to my monitors native resolution, to give the illusion of fractional scaling.

Heres proof running on my GNOME OS system - no Xwayland here!

Reading https://www.spurint.org/journal/2026/07/llms-and-xfwl4 where an #xfce dev admits to AI slop vibecoding what may be significant parts of the #Wayland port. This is a really bad precedent to set, this should not be allowed. I'm hoping this trend doesn't continue, but it will definitely lead to actionable responses if it does. #gnu #linux
